Read about her amazing trip to be inspired to add a vacation to the beautiful Canary Islands to your list of future travel destinations.

La Palma: small but has it all
La Palma, also known as “La Isla Bonita”, is known for its beautiful nature and its incredible hiking trails. But the news of the eruption of the volcano, which lasted for more than 80 days, discouraged many travelers from visiting the island. For those who don’t know, only a small part of the island was damaged by the volcano, which means there is still plenty of nature and wildlife to see that was not endangered by the eruption.

From Michael’s perspective, it’s easy to avoid the surroundings of the volcano, the only thing you need to be aware of are the obstacles. The eruption created a lot of obstacles, which made it a bit more difficult and longer to get from one point to another. But since the island is so small, this detour is not as bad as it seems. Another thing to keep in mind is that some places may still be undergoing renovations, so it’s best to do some research on what you can and cannot do.

But apart from that, there is nothing you cannot do on La Palma after the volcanic eruption. It is one of the perfect places for hiking and water sports. One of Michael’s most exciting moments was climbing Fuente Nueva Peak, going above the clouds, to the top, where you can see the entire crater and be in awe of the view. With blue skies, sun on your face and an amazing view, and being all alone on top of the mountain. Wouldn’t you like to experience this too?

Tenerife: amazing nature
Tenerife is only a 30-minute flight from La Palma, making it a must if you are already on La Palma. This island is the largest of the Canary Islands and offers thousands of things to do at any time of the year. Although some activities close depending on the weather, Tenerife is a great holiday destination for everyone.

While La Palma has a calm and peaceful atmosphere, Tenerife, on the other hand, has a livelier atmosphere, as more tourists are attracted to travel there. With all the resorts available, this island is the perfect destination for families and travelers looking for a relaxing vacation. But don’t let the resorts fool you, Tenerife is also a great destination for adventurers and nature lovers. Tenerife is home to Teide, a dormant volcano and also the highest peak in Spain, here you can find amazing hiking trails as well as in the Anaga mountains and Teno mountains. So head to the nearest visitor center and find out which hiking trail is best for you.

And finally, for nature lovers, in Tenerife you can sail alongside dolphins and whales. Dolphins live there year-round, while whales appear mainly during winter and spring, as it is their migration season. And if this is not amazing enough, you must visit the black sand beaches of Tenerife. Yes, black sand. Go to Playa del Ancón, Playa de Los Patos, La Fajana or Rambla de Castro, to see the best black sand beaches in Tenerife. According to Michael, black sand has a unique feel that is not comparable to anything else. This means that you must go to Tenerife and try it for yourself!
La Gomera: paradise for hikers
Just a ferry from Tenerife, you will find La Gomera. This is the second smallest of the Canary Islands, and you might think there isn’t much to see, but this is the definition of a hiker’s paradise. So if you were thinking of doing just a day trip to La Gomera, rethink it, since it has a lot of nature to discover and here you will experience the traditional Canarian charm.
The best hiking routes to do are the Alto de Garajonay, where you can have the option of going up by car and walking down to Hermigua. You can also go to the Cruce de Pajarito car park, or Valle Gran Rey, where you will find incredible viewpoints. The best part is that this island is known as a hiking destination, you will get to meet many fellow hikers with whom you can share your experience or go on a hike together! So pack your walking shoes and head to La Gomera.
